About BroadBand Light Therapy

The broadband light (or BBL) treatment utilizes energy-releasing technology to improve the aesthetics of the skin and also makes it appear younger and smoother. This works by applying therapeutic-grade light energy that mildly warms the top layer of skin and initiates collagen production. Those with an array of skin issues may benefit from BBL because it functions to correct sun damage, unwanted freckles, rosacea, and broken blood vessels. Also, it can help create a more smooth and even skin surface texture to generate fresh, luminous skin. BBL can be added to other cosmetic treatments to meet your requirements and goals. Our facility, Après Plastic Surgery in Portland, OR, offers BBL at the recommendation of Dr. Aric Aghayan as an advanced treatment proven to help rejuvenate our patients' skin.

BroadBand Light Therapy Ideal Candidates

An ideal candidate for BBL is any patient dealing with hyperpigmentation or textured skin. This could be caused by acne, sun damage, damaged capillaries, or rosacea. BBL can also help to make your skin appear more youthful by stimulating the production of collagen. By varying the types of filter and modality used, BBL can be utilized as a therapy and/or daily maintenance for a wide array of skin issues. Prior to undergoing treatment, the technician will explain how BBL technology might help you reach your desired results.

BroadBand Light Therapy Procedure Technique

After developing the perfect treatment plan, the programming of the BBL system will be adjusted to fit the needs of your skin. Before starting the procedure, your eyes will be protected from the laser with a cover. The technician will then gently pass the laser over your skin while focusing on the treatment locations. The amount of time necessary for your treatment will change, depending upon the issue being treated and whether any additional services were added to the BBL procedure. BBL procedures can ordinarily be finished in about one hour or less.

What to Expect with BroadBand Light Therapy

After the treatment, a soothing lotion may be smoothed onto your skin. The technician may also give post-treatment care directions and might advise reducing your exposure to the sun. Otherwise, patients are typically able to return to their regular daily routine. Outcomes from BBL may be noticed in 2 – 6 weeks after the first therapy, but best results will typically be observed after repeat BBL sessions. Your technician will suggest the recommended amount of procedures to achieve your preferred outcome.

BroadBand Light Therapy Frequently Asked Questions

How much does BBL cost?
Your technician should be able to estimate your costs in your initial consultation once your BBL treatment plan is developed. BBL costs will depend on where you want to get the treatment, the treatment area(s) size, and how many sessions will be needed. After your technician evaluates the condition of your skin and understands your concerns, he will help you develop your custom treatment plan. Après Plastic Surgery frequently runs specials on skin treatments, such as BBL, so watch our website or ask about our current deals when you make your appointment.

How many treatments will I need?
How many BBL treatments you need can be estimated in your initial consultation after your technician assesses the condition of your skin. On average, patients reach their goals after three sessions. Although, if you have serious pigmentation, discoloration, or sun damage, you might need more sessions. During your initial consultation, your technician will consider your goals and create your custom treatment plan. Your BBL sessions will be scheduled about one month apart so your skin can heal.

What areas can be treated with BBL?
Most areas of skin may be improved with BBL, but some of the most popular areas are the face, chest, neck, hands, shoulders, and upper back. These areas tend to have the most visible damage because they're frequently in the sun. The face, neck, and hands are also the first places to be affected by lifestyle and natural aging so treating these spots may help rejuvenate your overall appearance. In your initial consultation with your technician, tell them about all your areas of concerns so they can create your ideal BBL plan.

How is BBL different from other lasers?
The innovate BroadBand Light by Sciton is an advanced IPL (intense pulsed light) skin treatment. The wide range of energy wavelengths and dual lamps allow your technician to customize your BBL treatment for your needs and goals. Utilizing different energies, BBL can treat both red and brown lesions, plus dark and light spots, without damaging the areas of skin and tissue nearby. Safe, but effective, BBL can reveal a clear, beautiful complexion in less time compared to many other laser skin treatments.

Is BBL safe for all skin tones?
The energy wavelengths in a BroadBand light treatment can be adjusted for each patient's unique needs so BBL is safe for all skin tones. For your best results, we suggest you avoid unprotected ultraviolet (UV) light exposure (both tanning beds and natural sunlight) for at least two weeks before your appointment. After tanning, your skin has higher levels of pigment (melanin), which can absorb the BBL energy and impact your outcome. The treated areas will be especially sensitive to UV exposure so you need to not use tanning beds and limit sun exposure while you are getting BBL and for a minimum of 10 – 14 days following your last treatment.
