Will I Have a Mommy Makeover Scar?

/ Dr. Aric Aghayan

Will I Have a Mommy Makeover Scar?: Each year, mommy makeovers top the charts of popular post-baby surgeries. Mothers want to feel and look like themselves again, which often means reshaping areas that were negatively affected by pregnancy, birth, and breastfeeding.

But along with any type of body contouring that actually creates results, there's always a risk of scarring. While we wish it were different, any time we make an incision, scarring is the inevitable result. Mommy makeovers, if you were wondering, do require incisions.

The question, then, is: How bad will the mommy makeover scar or scars be?

Let's start by identifying where most mommy makeover patients will experience scars. We'll then talk about how you can minimize their appearance for nearly flawless results.

Will You Have Mommy Makeover Scars?

Will I Have a Mommy Makeover Scar?

>Whenever an incision is made and the skin and tissue are cut, the resulting wound will end up creating a scar as it heals. The good news is that state-of-the-art technologies and highly skilled surgeons are able to create incisions that heal almost seamlessly so that the scar is significantly less noticeable than it otherwise would be.

Ultimately, how many mommy makeover marks you have at the end of your surgery will depend on which procedures you choose. If you have a breast lift, for example, you may have scars around the areolae and down the lower half of each breast.

If you opt for a tummy tuck, you'll have at least one horizontal scar on your lower abdomen (beneath the underwear line). You may also have additional scars around your trunk and going from your lower abdomen up to your belly button — depending on the type of tummy tuck you get.

Liposuction does not tend to cause significant scarring. You may have small “dot marks” after liposuction, but nothing major. Each lipo scar is usually as big as a freckle.

Do Mommy Makeover Scars Go Away?

Scars from mommy makeover surgery will never completely go away, but they will fade. In several years, you should hardly notice most liposuction scars. However, other scars related to breast lift surgery and tummy tuck surgery may be more noticeable.

As stated above, however, with proper care and some scar reduction therapy, even these scars can grow significantly flatter and less pigmented.

Do Tummy Tuck Scars Stay Forever?

Yes, you will have your tummy tuck scars forever. They won't ever completely disappear, but they will fade significantly with time, and they will also flatten out. Keep in mind, however, that tummy tuck scars won't fade and flatten if you don't care for them properly during the first few weeks of your recovery.

How Do You Get Rid of Mommy Makeover Scars?

While you can't totally get rid of plastic surgery scars, you can reduce their appearance. Here's how:

  • Start by carefully reviewing your plastic surgeon's recovery instructions. Do not stray from these instructions.
  • Do not expose your scars to sunlight. Ultraviolet rays can make scars more pigmented and more noticeable.
  • Do not put strain on your scars or stretch your treatment areas in any way. Doing this can disfigure your scars and even cause the incisions to open up as well.
  • Once your scars have healed, consider scar therapy. Serums, lotions, and silicone sheets may reduce the appearance of scars over time.
  • Discuss scar massage with your plastic surgeon. After your incisions have healed, sometimes, a regular regimen of massage can promote flatter, less noticeable scar tissue.

This is difficult to calculate as all mommy makeovers are unique. Therefore, the statistics would not be representative of just one consistent surgery, and too many factors might skew the results.

Still, we can take a look at two commonly performed mommy makeover procedures: liposuction and tummy tucks. The liposuction mortality rate is about 1.3 in 50,000. The tummy tuck mortality rate is about 1 in 13,000.
