How to Choose the Right Breast Implant Size

Breast Implant Size

Breast implant size is one of the most important decisions you'll need to make when undergoing breast augmentation surgery.

But the process of choosing your ideal implant size isn't just as simple as looking at a breast implant size chart or using a breast implant size calculator and taking your best guess. Unlike bras, you can't swap out breast implants so easily if you don't end up liking the way they look or feel.

We want you to achieve exactly what you're looking for once you're fully healed from your breast augmentation. And this starts with getting your breast implant size right.

Below, we've listed the nine most important steps to take as you navigate the challenging hurdle of choosing your new breast size. This may feel like a heavy burden, but the good news is, you'll have your plastic surgeon and their team with you the entire way. Let's get started.

9 Steps to Choosing the Right Breast Implant Size

Step #1 – Consult with a board certified plastic surgeon.

Sitting down with your plastic surgeon is going to feel like your dream of getting new breasts is finally underway. It can be an intimidating, yet thrilling experience.

During your consultation, your surgeon will consider your body type (including your height, overall shape, etc.), breast anatomy (bra cup size, breast width, etc.), and your aesthetic goals. Then, they'll likely be able to make a few recommendations right then and there. Be sure to be open and honest about your expectations and concerns.

Also remember that breast implants are not measured by cup size. They're measured by implant volume in cubic centimeters (CCs).

For example, you wouldn't get a “breast implant size D” if you wanted to have a D cup size after your breast augmentation surgery. A size D breast implant does not exist, but your surgeon can assess your current breast size and choose an implant with the appropriate volume of material to augment your natural breast and achieve a D cup size.

Step #2 – Understand your body's natural proportions.

One of the primary considerations when choosing implant size is your body's natural proportions. Unless you are someone who desires a radical look, most patients are going for a natural, harmonious balance between their breasts and the rest of their body.

Keep in mind that a size that suits one person may not be right for another. Breast implant surgery must be catered to the individual. So, the focus should be on the cup size that complements you and not what your friend or neighbor got. Remember that smaller breast implants can create just as much of an impact as larger breast implants.

Step #3 – Consider your lifestyle and aesthetic goals.

Your lifestyle plays a large role in determining the appropriate implant size for you too.

For active individuals seeking a breast augmentation procedure, smaller implants may be more practical. For those with a more sedentary lifestyle, a larger breast implant size might work. There is a wide range of breast implant sizes and shapes, so you can definitely find the optimal option for you.

Additionally, consider the type of clothes you prefer and how you want to feel in them. Different implants can create different levels of cleavage or projection, so be open with your surgeon as you explore your options.

Step #4 – Assess your natural breast anatomy.

Things like the amount of existing breast tissue you have, your natural skin elasticity, and your chest width are all factors that your surgeon will evaluate. These factors will influence the range of implant sizes that can achieve your desired look.

Also remember that some patients who come in wanting implants would actually benefit far more from a breast lift. This isn't always the case, but it's not uncommon for a patient seeking perkier breasts with more cleavage to be told this can be achieved with a breast lift and no need for implants. Of course, a breast lift with implants (breast augmentation mastopexy) is also an option.

Step #5 – Consider the various implant types available.

There are various types of breast implants. In addition to size, you'll also need to consider the type of breast implant you want. The two primary material options are saline breast implants and silicone breast implants. You'll also need to choose between teardrop or round breast implants, and texture may come into play as well.

Each material type, shape, and texture comes with its own unique characteristics, and your surgeon will help you decide which is best for your desired outcome.

Step #6 – Talk to your surgeon about breast implant profile.

Breast implants come in different profiles, which determine how far they project out from the chest wall. Understanding the profile implants have and what each one can achieve can be tricky, but your surgeon will have visuals to show you, which can help. Breast implant profile works in tandem with implant diameter size.

There are various options, such as low, moderate, high, or extra-high profile. There is a wide variety of the most popular breast implants available to choose from and depending on your anatomy and goals, you can find the one to help you achieve the specific look you want. Moderate profile implants will, as the name suggests, give you a moderate projection.

Step #7 – Use Crysalix 3D Tecnology to visualize yourself with various breast sizes.

Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Aric Aghayan uses Crisalix 3D Imaging, a computer software program, to show patients exactly what they'd look like with different implants.

We begin by conducting a body scan to generate a 3D computer image of your body. Using this digital representation, we can then modify the size and contour of your breasts on the screen. You will have the opportunity to provide feedback and direct the alterations, sharing your preferences as we alter your implant profile, shape, size, and more.

Once you've achieved your desired representation, these outcomes can assist Dr. Aghayan in identifying the most suitable breast implants for you.

Step #8 – Be sure you're being realistic about your expectations.

Remember that it's essential to have realistic expectations about what breast augmentation can achieve. Breast implants can enhance your appearance, but they can't completely transform your entire body. Communicate openly with your surgeon about your expectations and listen to their recommendations.

Step #9 – Take your time when making this important decision.

Choosing the right breast implant size is not a decision to rush. Take your time and weigh your options.

Consult with your surgeon, and even seek a second opinion if you aren't sure. It's essential to be confident in your choice so that you can ensure long-term satisfaction and avoid the need for a breast implant revision right away.
